Can artificial intelligence interpret abstract concepts and visualize intangible entities?
I have just tested its current possibilities to find out how it handles popular quotes about books, libraries and reading that I took from the Goodreads quote collection.
The AI image generation I am currently working with is Adobe Firefly. It did an outstanding job with creating steampunk bookmobiles that now I am using in a campaign that promotes reading.
Is AI good enough to show that books are a uniquely portable magic or that if you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need? The list of the best results is shown in a list below.
When it comes to methodology, I did the simple thing: pasted the sheer quote into the prompt area, without adding any other hints. The options were set to return square images with “art” selected as a content type.
I have tested more than 200 quotes, and, well, only these dozen are good enough to share. About half of the results were as ridiculous as the image below.

The tool wanted to write down the quote (You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy books and that’s kind of the same thing), but as you know, the AI image generators are incapable of doing so yet. All the results with the failed text show that artificial intelligence couldn’t come up with anything better.
Below, you will see the best AI-generated images inspired by famous book quotes. What do you think of them? Would you like me to make the test in a year or so, to find out how AI is evolving?
