The current book reading habits in the U.S. (survey and infographic)

A recent poll shows interesting habits related to purchasing and reading books.

In October 2023, ThriftBooks and OnePoll conducted a survey among 2,000 U.S. adults, asking about their reading habits and their decision-making process related to books.

According to the poll, the average U.S. adult reads as many as 8 books a month. That would make 96 books a year!

The results are far too optimistic, compared to other polls. For instance, Statista revealed in July 2023, that 40% of Americans who considered themselves book lovers have read over 20 books a year.

How do Americans buy books? That’s interesting, and it’s great that such questions are being asked.

It turns out that 57% of the surveyed readers have bought or read a book based solely on its cover. What’s more, 96% of those said that these books met their expectations.

Another question was about book adaptations. 67% of respondents admitted they only read books that have been adapted into movies or TV shows.

When it comes to daily reading routine, more people read during a day (88%) than at night (69%).

💬 Day readers are also more likely than night readers to prefer to read while surrounded by others (49% vs. 36%).

Out of those who read at night, 55% admitted it helps them fall asleep faster.

What are your reading habits? When do you find it most enjoyable to read? How is your reading challenge going?
