Their new report reveals a shocking 65% increase in the number of unique book titles targeted for removal from schools and libraries in 2023 compared to 2022. This marks the highest level of censorship documented by the ALA in its history.
What’s driving this censorship surge? The report identifies a troubling focus on silencing diverse voices. Nearly half of the challenged books (47%) explore the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals.
The ALA emphasizes the importance of fighting back. They urge readers to join the “Unite Against Book Bans” initiative, a national movement dedicated to protecting access to information.
