Censorship in 2022 by the numbers / Infographic: American Library Association

Every year, the American Library Association releases the list of the most challenged books. The list is based on reports and news stories from library professionals and community members.

In 2022, there was an unprecedented number of book challenges, with 1,269 reported. It’s the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA started tracking censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago.

Of the record 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, the most challenged are listed in the infographic below, together with reasons cited for censoring.

The most challenged book of 2022 is Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer. It’s an autobiographical comic which serves as a powerful guide on gender identity, charting the author’s own journey of self-identity.

You can compare the recently challenged books with the ones from previous years. Explore ALA’s Most Challenged Books archive for Top 10 lists and data going back to 2001.
