The National Book Foundation has just announced the longlist for the 2023 National Book Award for Translated Literature.
The list includes ten titles that were originally published in seven different languages: Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Six of the honorees have previously been recognized by the National Book Award for Translated Literature, including Khaled Khalifa and Leri Price, who were both finalists in 2019.
The authors and translators on the list have been recognized by numerous international prizes, including the Thornton Wilder Prize for Translation, the Biblioteca de Narrativa Prize, the Goncourt Prize, and the International Booker Prize.
The longlist is a strong indication of the quality and diversity of translated literature being published today. It features works from a wide range of countries and cultures, and it showcases the work of some of the best translators in the world.
A total of 154 books were submitted by publishers for the 2023 National Book Award for Translated Literature.
The winner of the 2022 National Book Award for Translated Literature is Samanta Schweblin for her novel Seven Empty Houses, translated from the Spanish by Megan McDowell.
Seven Empty Houses tells the story of a group of people who are invited to spend a weekend at a remote house in the countryside. However, things soon start to go wrong, and the guests find themselves trapped in a strange and unsettling situation.
The Finalists for the Translated Literature along with four other categories will be revealed on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. The winner will be announced on November 15, 2023. Mark your calendars!
